Adopting a shelter pet is a rewarding and life-changing experience, for you AND for your new best friend. At Hawaii Island Humane Society, our mission is to enhance the bond between humans and animals. Pets are a lifelong commitment. As living beings, pets have physical, social, and emotional needs. Our trained Lifesaving Programs team utilizes progressive, conversational adoption counseling to help make the best matches for not only our shelter pets, but also for you! In line with national best practices and animal welfare industry standards, our goals are to remove barriers to adoption while also helping our shelter pets live their best lives as companion animals.
1. Check out our available pets!
2. Submit an application directly from the animal's profile, or submit an application below:
3. Wait to hear from an adoption counselor! Our adoption team will get back to you within 72 business hours of submitting your adoption application via phone or email. If your application has been approved, our adoption counselors will reach out to schedule either a meet and greet or adoption at the shelter where the animal is located.
*Please note: Our Keaau Shelter and Animal Community Center in Holualoa are currently open for browsing Friday-Tuesday, 10am to 3pm. If you'd like to browse our animals before applying for adoption, please stop by! All adoptions and meet and greets with an adoption counselor are still by appointment only. We cannot guarantee adoption counselors are available for on-the-spot meet and greets at this time. Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to follow up with every application by phone, and may respond via email as well. We strictly prohibit the use of foster/shelter dogs for any activity other than being a companion animal.
